Information for Travel

Thursday 29thNovember 2007
Research released by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has revealed that over a third (36%) of skiers and snowboarders under 25 get into trouble abroad due to the lethal combination of alcohol, altitude and adrenaline. The worrying research reveals that nearly 45% of young people are not aware that alcohol can affect you more quickly when drinking at high altitudes, such as at many ski resorts. Of the 36% of people who drank themselves into trouble, a third injured themselves, over two thirds were fined for causing damage and over half were asked to leave the resort! More people are taking part in high risk activities without the right preparation. A massive 31% of Brits don’t take out travel insurance that covers the sports they intend to take part in, and two thirds (66%) wouldn’t take photocopies of important documents e.g. passport, credit card details. This contrasts starkly with over two thirds (68%) of the population who cite their ‘preparation’ for a winter holiday simply as buying new clothes and researching the nightlife. As part of its ‘Know Before You Go’ campaign, the FCO is urging winter sports travellers to be more prepared: If you injure yourself whilst under the influence of alcohol, it is very likely your insurance policy will be invalid. This could mean high costs – if you break a leg on the Alps, a trip in an air ambulance and treatment could set you back £10,000. Being aware of this and making some simple preparations, like ensuring your insurance policy covers you for everything you are likely to do, could mean the difference between a holiday to remember and one you’d give anything to forget.

• It is essential to take out travel insurance when taking any trip abroad, no matter how short your trip. And when participating in high risk activities such as skiing or snowboarding, you must ensure your policy covers these

• Remember alcohol can affect you quicker at high altitudes and most insurers won’t pay out if you injure yourself or others whilst under the influence of alcohol

• Make sure you use good quality equipment and protect yourself against injury. Know your ability level - don’t take on the black run after two days on the beginners slopes!

• Observe and adhere to the rules of the resort and research your destination at www.fco.gov.uk/travel in case local laws and customs differ from the UK

• Take a record of key information (photocopy your passport, take your insurance details, and note your credit card number and cancellation details)

• If travelling in Europe, take your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card). This card entitles you to reduced cost or free healthcare in most European countries. Remember though, that EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance – you must have both to be fully covered

• For more tips if you’re planning on taking a winter sports break, check out www.fco.gov.uk/travel

The trip is a snap at only 299 English pounds, so its pretty cheap, for that you get your accommodation for the 6 nights, an awesome bus journey over there, which is guarantied to provide you with a few fond memories, a lift pass and breakfast and dinner for 3 days. One of the other nights we are planning on having a meal on the mountain which should be a good bit of carnage and well worth booking on to! It also includes some ski guiding if you want it. You can get lessons and hire gear, if you do both the trip will end up costing you about 399, maybe a bit less, but you could always start learning now down at the dry slope and be a pro by December.

My first official News Post

Wednesday 3stOctober 2007
Hey guys, First and foremost a big hello to everyone who is new to snowriders and a slack high-5 to all those who came back for more snowriders related debauchery!, thanks to FaCE for holding up the good ship snowrider over the last two years, and in a dramatic and somewhat emotional ceremony FaCE handed over his proverbial love child to me to take care of and keep all you guys posted on the going ons within the snowriders! My name is Stu Rex and im tagging along with this years committee as an unsung unofficial member of the committee, why you ask, well when the new committee was elected they realised that no one could update the website so i was draughted in with my fairly limited skill set to keep the site alive!

Goodbye, Hello and Welcome to Snowriders.co.uk! Monday 1stOctober 2007
The Freshers are enrolled, the returners are back; the old-school are still hovering around the fringes, refusing to let go. In either case, welcome to Plymouth and especially to the Plymouth Snowriders -- OFFICIALLY the Coolest Collection of People in Western Europe, and current holders of the prestigious NHS "Most Ambulance Call-outs to a Non-commercial Social Event (2006)" Award! In either case, if Stu 'Wrecked' Rex is even slightly less slack than me, then this place, this Snowriders.co.uk is gonna be your one-stop-shop for all Snowrider-type related festivities! Naturally there's a fuckload of things that need doing and updating however I got off my arse, downloaded some password software, cracked my own passwords ad relayed that to Stu, so from here-on in add this to your favorites (ctrl + d) and let the freestyle flow!

So thats a welcome to you, and a goodbye from me;

It's been a pleasure...
